Wedding Planner Vs Organising Your Own Big Day
Kate Middleton and Prince William turned to the services of a wedding planner to help organise their big day, but then they were being watched by millions and had a wealth of dignitaries to entertain, not to mention Royal protocol to adhere to! However with many couples working full-time there simply isn’t enough hours in the day needed to plan every aspect of the big day, so some of those couples are turning to wedding planners for help. It can seem like a great idea to just sit back and let the wedding planner do all the hard work, but what exactly does a wedding planner do?
What Does A Wedding Planner Do?
Well everything really! They are there to ensure that the day runs smoothly, so they will arrange all the meetings and appointments, handle your budget, guide the couple as to wedding etiquette, will help with seating plans and colour schemes, iron out any problems and will act as mediator between the two families.
When organising your own wedding there is always something you’ve forgotten or left to the last minute, such as wedding favours or wedding gifts for the best man and chief bridesmaid. There’s no such danger with a wedding planner as they know the nuances of the day off by heart and will often suggest things you’d never even thought of. Online wedding shops have a wide range of wedding gifts, unusual wedding favours and great table decorations that can be supplied direct to your wedding planner and if you are buying in bulk then you do save pounds on delivery charges.
If you have a tight budget then the wedding planner will make sure that nothing goes over that budget and will often haggle on your behalf, getting you the best deal they can. This can have huge advantages as hotels and major wedding chains are more likely to give discounts to a wedding planner in return for future recommendations and custom. And of course getting a wedding planner does not mean handing over entire control of your day to a stranger.
A good wedding planner will get to know you both as a couple and will meet most members of your family, so they will have a good idea of the kind of day you want and what your tastes are. They are often called upon for their mediation services, to offer compromises between two different families and smooth out any personal hitches.
Plus the couple still have a say in everything from the wedding gift list to the gold glitter confetti, no decision is taken without consulting the couple first.
So how much does this all cost?
On average the typical wedding planner will charge around 20% of the total cost of the wedding. Some couples would argue that this amount is saved in terms of discounts gained by the planner and the enormous amount of time saved and stress avoided.
However couldn’t you just as easily organise the big day yourself?
Organising Your Own Wedding
So long as you are not planning a multi-million pound affair with half the world leaders in attendance and difficult family members to keep happy, there is no reason why you can’t organise your own wedding with the minimum of fuss, after all the wedding day is only as complicated as you want it to be.
There are many online wedding planners available to help you to create a list of exactly what you need to do and when. You can also download wedding budget planners so that you can break up your budget into categories and then individual items so you can take savings from some things over to make up for added expenditure on others.
The only thing an online wedding planner won’t do is act as mediator between warring families, however no doubt if you ‘Google It’ that you’d come up with plenty of advice on working out wedding compromises!
It is no doubt cheaper to organise your own big day but you do need to spend the time necessary making phone calls, calculating costs, meeting appointments, shopping for wedding gifts and co-ordinating events so that the day runs smoothly. However with a team of willing family and friends it’s not an impossible task and your day could feel all the better knowing that you organised it all, down to the wedding car ribbon!
So if you have the cash and are planning a large wedding with all the trimmings then it makes sense to hire a wedding planner who can help bring it all together and take away the many stresses associated with planning a wedding. However if you are on a tight budget, then with the advent of the internet and the many free resources available there is no reason why you can’t rope in family and friends to help organise the wedding of a lifetime and do just a good a job as the professional wedding planner!
