Why is my mother so upset that Im having a quick ceremony and a very small reception at a friend’s house?

My mother thinks that a wedding has to be a big to-do, that it takes months and months of planning, that everything needs to be like it “should” be. What is “should”? In my mind there is no “should” for anything. I don’t have months to plan some wedding. I am recovering from brain surgery and i am due to start radiation next month. Please, please, somebody tell me why MAN-MADE rituals are blown so out of proportion, especially by the mother of the bride-to-be….?
It seems to me that the caterers and party-planners and the banquet halls love the fact that people go absolutley over the top about weddings… of course, they make mega-bucks… but does it make the couple any happier or love one-another more 5 or 10 years down the road? Venting here, yes, only because my mother acts like I am breaking a commandment.

You are very right and i would need to vent if I was going through that too! Whether you are married in a 20 million dollars wedding or a small 500 dollar wedding you are still just as married! And still just as in love.
